Quick Win: 3 easy things you can do today to upgrade your website.
Hello busy person, it’s me, another busy person. There’s a ton of stuff you need to do today and the thought of adding one more thing to that list is giving you a sudden nose bleed. Everyone needs a quick win now and again so I’m here to give you one! Here are three easy changes you can make on your website that will help tighten things up, sand down a few of those rough edges, and help your products and services stand out to visitors!
#1 - Remove the “Site built by/powered by/etc“ tag in your site footer.
Ok, this doesn’t really apply if you hired a designer who has a signature at the bottom of the site (cough cough* we do that). However, Squarespace, Wix, Wordpress, Shopify, and pretty much every website builder out there includes their own branding on your site if you opt for only their basic subscription. It makes sense. They lower the cost of setting up your site in exchange for marketing their own platform.
The problem? It looks tacky and makes you look cheap.
Everyone will see that on your site and will know you’re only willing to invest the bare minimum in your online presentation. On top of that, it’s added content that only jumbles your design, adds external links to your pages, and distracts site visitors from engaging with you, your brand, and services. Pay the extra $10/mo+ to get rid of that garbage.
#2 - Keep your team page up to date.
If Brenda retired in 2017 and is living on a beach in Barbados, why oh why is she still on your website? Take down old staff profiles!
Speaking of staff profiles, whatever format you choose for showing your team, keep it uniform and consistent. If you have a short bio for some employees and nothing for others, that looks clunky. If you have some professional headshots mixed with pixelated flip phone photos from 2007, that looks terrible.
Stop. Get help.
It goes a long way to invest in professional team headshots. Not only will they look much more professional, they will have a similar look and feel and elevate the aesthetic of your entire website!
#3 - Ensure you have a clear call to action visible on each page.
Does your website leave visitors unsure of their next step? Have you effectively led them to see their need for your products or services but shied away from asking them to buy for fear of being too pushy?
Your story, your services, and the problem they solve are all important to understand but none it matters if people don’t know what to do with it. What step should visitors to your website take? If you really believe what you offer can help people have a better life, you’re actually doing them a disservice by not converting them into a customer.
Of course you don’t want to turn your website into a spammy ad-space that feels like you might have stumbled into the dungeons of the dark web, but you can avoid this by providing clear steps for potential clients to further engage with you.
Ensuring each page has a clear step for customers top take has the added benefit of forcing you to connect each page to the needs of your client. How does your staff page serve your client? How does your story video help your client?
The goal is not to position yourself at the center of your client’s experience. As Donald Miller loves to point out throughout his Storybrand content, you want to position your client as the hero of the story and let yourself be their trusted guide.
And there you have it! Three simple things you can change fix right now to make your website even more strategic and effective!
